ome retailers seem have a natural knack for creating visually attractive
and stimulating displays, while others have honed their skills with years
of trial and error. Whatever your skill level, there will be benefits from
reading our cover story on display techniques at public lands shops.
This is our Buyer’s Guide issue, and the listing of top-notch companies is a
resource you can use all year.
In the Zoo and Aquarium Section, we look at T-shirt and souvenir trends,
and we also offer a special music section. And in the College Bookstores section,
you can read about the back to school rush and licensed products at the nation’s
college bookstores.
If you are in the market to refurbish or to open a new store, or are dealing
with a small space, our Minor League Baseball section story explores these topics.
Jewelry, candles and scented merchandise are top product categories for all
types of shops, and we offer stories on these products. Additionally, we cover
plush for sale at flower and gift shops, New Year’s Eve merchandise at party
stores and Christmas trends.
Energy Solutions
The country needs a multi-pronged program over five to six years to solve the
energy dilemma. We need to become self-sufficient and not depend on unstable
regimes.
Putting the following six steps into action will help turn around the economy
and make us less vulnerable to foreign extremists.
1.) Drilling. We should drill off the coast, in Alaska and in the Dakotas.
2.) Build oil refineries. This will help, along with new drilling.
3.) Shale can be converted into oil at today’s high prices. The United States
has as much shale in Colorado and Utah as there is oil in the Middle East.
4.) Most oil is used in business, not cars. One alternative is nuclear power.
Nuclear power would cut down on imported oil. Additionally, solar power plant
applications for public lands should not be held up. A third alternative is wind
power.
5.) Americans use 401 K retirement programs to save. People should be
allowed to withdraw money at no penalty to buy hybrids and other fuel-efficient
cars. Additionally, people should be allowed to withdraw at no penalty to put
solar panels on their homes.
6.) Speculators have distorted the marketplace. Commodity futures were not
intended for speculators to buy at low margins. Raise margins so only buyers
and sellers in the actual marketplace will participate.
