he early New Year is an exciting time for our staff, as this is the season we visit some of the most crucial trade shows. Additionally, this issue of the magazine enjoys wide distribution at about 10 of these shows.

This is our special candles and scented merchandise issue, and we include a section devoted to good-selling items in these categories sought out by your customers.

In our cover story, we offer a look at country giftware in country stores. This merchandise gets a chance to shine in antique display pieces that create stories, according to the article.

Zoo and aquarium shops are integral parts of the guest experience at these fun and family-oriented attractions. In our Zoo and Aquarium section, we offer stories on how these shops create winning displays and sell jewelry.

Employee training is an area where there is always room for improvement. In science museum gift stores, familiarity with the exhibits is almost as important as product knowledge. For this issue, our contributor spoke with science museum gift store managers all over the country to gather tips on and insights into how to best train workers.

In our continuing effort to bring you the latest retailing information from the country’s state and national parks, we offer a story on apparel and gift sales at state parks in Nevada, and a second piece on shops at national parks that are members of the Association of Partners for Public Lands (APPL).

Pet gifts are a booming segment of the retail landscape. For the first time, we offer a story on the boutiques that are leading the way in providing goods and services for pets and the people who care for them.

At college bookstores, sales are often dictated by the seasons. In our ICBA Section, we discuss selling the spring semester at these popular shops. In a second college bookstore story, retailers can read about how special services along with diverse merchandise are entering into the retail equation.

Plush is a popular staple for all types of shops, and sells especially well for hospital gift stores. Our story focuses on how hospital retailers are merchandising this strong category to boost sales.

We also offer stories on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Administrative Professionals Week, graduations, marketing and promotions, window displays, and management.

We hope you enjoy the issue. Please e-mail us at the address below with your comments, suggestions, and questions.

“THE PEOPLE WHO BUILD THE FUTURE ARE THOSE
WHO KNOW THAT GREATER THINGS ARE YET TO
COME, AND THAT THEY THEMSELVES WILL HELP
BRING THEM ABOUT. THEIR MINDS ARE ILLUMINATED
BY THE BLAZING SUN OF HOPE. THEY NEVER STOP TO
DOUBT. THEY HAVEN’T TIME.” - MELVIN EVANS.
