OUR TOY FAIR ISSUE

f you are traveling to Toy Fair or other winter trade shows, we wish you productive trips full of insights on how you can improve your operation. This issue is full of good ideas on how to reach your audience, and on how to better manage and motivate your staff.

In the Zoo and Aquarium Section, we examine how to serve difficult-to-reach teen visitors to aquarium gift shops. Also in the section we examine the surprising popularity of jewelry at zoo stores. And to commemorate Toy Fair, we feature a special Plush and Playthings segment.

African American history museums are enjoying a resurgence in attendance, and this issue we cover how the facilities’ gift shops are responding to renewed interest in our nation’s African American past and present.

Independent college bookstores are facing the challenges of today’s economy with imaginative buying, our story found, and NACS member stores reflect on CAMEX 2009 in a separate story.

Environmental concerns are top of mind at green retailers, and we spoke with a number of these stores in a special eco-aware retailing section that includes coverage in words and photographs of the ARAMARK Retail Expo, which was held late last year.

The Denver Merchandise Mart is a valuable resource for all types of shops, and in our Resort section we interviewed several of these retailers regarding giftware trends.

We also cover licensed sports merchandise at Sports Avenue retail stores, Halloween at party shops across the country, the psychology of consumer spending patterns in light of the challenging economy, and how to manage and motivate your employees.

Four Easy Steps to Get Our Economy Moving

  1. No new taxes. Learn from history. Hoover and Roosevelt raised taxes from 25 percent to 63 percent, added import tax and tax check writing, which made the Depression worse.

  2. Allow people to take money from their retirement accounts at no penalty to buy cars, houses and pay off credit card debt.

  3. Get the politics away from Congress and corruption like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Break up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into small private banks in all regions of the country to get housing loans flowing.

  4. Undertake a bipartisan campaign on what is right with America. Use Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, etc. to tour the country with a positive message.

We hope you enjoy the issue. Please send your comments, questions and suggestions to the e-mail address below.
