Stocking the Best Merchandise for Every Budget

There are certain souvenirs and gifts that will always sell well at destination shops. Among these best bets for retailers are toys, plush and T-shirts. This issue, to commemorate Toy Fair 2012, which is scheduled Feb. 12-15, 2012, in New York City, we offer special toy coverage that includes interviews with store owners and managers at independent toy stores, zoos and aquariums and children's museums. The stories assess the selling environment in 2012 and provide tips on appealing to children, parents and grandparents with the best merchandise. Four of our staff members will attend Toy Fair, and we hope to see you there.

In an expansive look at apparel, you can read about T-shirt sales at resort and beach stores and wearables at inspirational shops, minor league baseball fan outlets and zoos and aquariums. We hope you enjoy this coverage of merchandise categories that can make a real difference in your store's profits, and in your customers' satisfaction.

Jewelry is another top gift that presents the perfect opportunity to foster a one-for-you, one-for-me buying mentality. The magazine includes ads from all of the top vendors that sell to a wide variety of destination locations, and the ads are the perfect complement to our extensive and in-depth editorial reporting. In this issue's jewelry section, we cover offering inexpensive jewelry at gift stores, a story that includes sidebar articles on finding new vendors and preventing theft, keeping the sports-licensed jewelry section interesting and relevant at college bookstores, and how to do well with jewelry at beach and resort stores.

SGN offers the best coverage of the trade shows that are important to the industry. The ASD/Las Vegas show is scheduled for March 25-28, 2012, and we offer a special Show Preview Section to get you ready for the event. Additionally, Transworld’s 28th International Halloween, Costume & Party Show is slated for March 8-11, 2012 in St. Louis, Mo., and we offer a look at Halloween merchandise at hospital shops as well as facts and figures on the occasion from the United States Census Bureau. The issue also contains all of the latest news from Urban Expositions and the International Gift Exposition in the Smokies™/Souvenir Super Show™.

The issue also features stories on how to assess the mood of, and serve, shoppers that stop by carts and kiosks in malls, offering the best customer service to party store patrons, how technology is making a difference in store operations at public land visitors’ centers and gift shops, innovations in gift selling at Hallmark stores and encouraging impulse sales at zoo and aquarium souvenir outlets.

I hope you enjoy the issue. Please email me at editorsgnmag@kanec.com. with your comments, questions and suggestions.
