Selling More of the Right Kind of Merchandise

All types of destination, general gift, theme, attraction, country, handicraft and other retail outlets are poised to take advantage of shoppers’ pent up wish to splurge a little. And it does not seem like splurging at all when the merchandise mix includes practical, fun and affordable apparel. In this issue, we examine apparel trends and sales at all types of shops, including sea and beach-themed stores, nautical museums, resort gift stores, T-shirt shops and minor league baseball fan stores.

Jewelry is another sure-selling merchandise category, and each issue we bring you insightful stories on how to do well with this the most portable souvenir. In our jewelry section, you can read how hospital gift store buyers nurture relationships with jewelry vendors, keeping jewelry displays fresh with current styles at country and seaside shops, how inspirational shops get spiritual messages across with jewelry and wildlife-themed jewelry at zoo and aquarium stores. The section also includes the bonus sidebar “Six Tips for Choosing New Jewelry” and the latest jewelry product news.

This issue also contains our 2012 Annual Megabucks feature. This spring survey article reviews sales trends and earnings at all types of shops, from zoo, aquarium and resort stores to party, hospital and national park retail outlets and many others. Other articles we feature include a look at display tactics for mall carts and kiosks, sales trends at year-round Christmas stores, licensed merchandise sales at college bookstores, the shopping experience at 5 & 10 stores around the country, candle and scented merchandise sales at party stores, plush and toy sales trends at APPL member stores, organic products at zoo and aquarium shops plus tips for selling the best in edible souvenirs.

Each edition we bring you special sections to keep you informed regarding the most popular trade shows and trade associations. In this issue we present a special ASD/Las Vegas informational section, which touches on the March 25-28, 2012 trade show, a preview section from The International Gift Exposition in the Smokies®/Souvenir Super Show™ for an event that takes place Nov. 6-10, 2012 in Sevierville, Tenn. and feature stories directly from the National Association of Retail Buyers (NARB).

Staff members Larry White and Joseph W. Mellek III will be attending the ASD/Las Vegas show, so stop by the magazine’s booth and say “Hello.”

I hope you enjoy the issue. Please email me at with your comments, questions and suggestions.
